Windows: Mass Rename Files In Order – In Seconds!

Hey everyone, welcome! In this article, I’ll show you how to mass rename files in order using Windows—no downloads or software tweaks needed. It’s a built-in feature most people overlook.

Here’s my challenge: I’ve got a bunch of video files of my kids I want to edit in DaVinci Resolve. They’re organized by date and time, but the filenames are so similar it’s hard to sort them properly. I want them renamed sequentially—like 1, 2, 3, and so on.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Open the folder and hit Ctrl + A to select everything.
  • Deselect files and folder you don’t want renamed by holding Ctrl and clicking it.
  • Press F2—make sure the first file is selected and waiting to be renamed.
  • Type a name like “A” and press Enter.

Done! Your files now show up as A (1), A (2), A (3)…

To undo, just hit Ctrl + Z.

Don’t mess up the sequence by using Shift to select files from top to bottom. If the last file is selected, the renaming will start from there, throwing off the order.

That’s it! Hope this helps.
