How to Upgrade Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 9 (2024 Model) SSD

Upgrading the storage in a 2024 Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 9 (model 16IRX9) is a straightforward process that significantly improves this already capable machine.

Setup

Before starting, ensure your workspace is clean and dust-free to protect the internal components. To avoid static electricity, work on a hard surface rather than carpet and consider using an affordable anti-static wrist strap to stay grounded.

Safety is the priority, so confirm the laptop is fully powered down and the charger is disconnected. Wait at least thirty seconds after unplugging to allow residual power to dissipate. Place the laptop on a soft surface, like a motherboard box, to prevent scratching the chassis.

Opening The Case

The 16-inch unit is secured by ten small screws on the back panel that must be removed first.

While removing screws is easy, prying off the plastic bottom panel requires patience. Use a thin prying tool to gently create a gap between the panel and the body. Start from the sides rather than the front; this ensures any minor accidental scratches remain less visible. Slowly work around the edges until you can grip the plate with your fingers, then lift it carefully to release the rear clips. Note, don’t try to pry from the back, instead pry the sides of front and lift the case off the back with your hands.

Disconnect The Battery

Once the panel is off, immediately disconnect the battery to eliminate all power. Locate the large battery and use your fingernails to gently wiggle the black plastic connector side-to-side while pulling. Never use metal tools for this step and avoid pulling on the wires themselves to prevent damage. After waiting a few seconds to ensure all residual power has dissipated, you can proceed with the storage upgrade.

2 Upgrade Options

The 2024 Lenovo Legion 5 offers two options: you can either replace the factory drive or utilize the second M.2 slot to add additional storage.

Upgrading Existing SSD

The factory SSD in this model is typically a 2242 size, meaning it is 22mm wide and 42mm long. Most high-performance upgrades use the 2280 format, which is significantly longer at 80mm. To remove the existing drive, simply unscrew it; the SSD will pop up at an angle, allowing you to slide it out easily.

If you are installing a larger 2280 drive, you must address the pre-installed standoff. This small metal piece acts as the mounting point for the shorter 2242 drive. Using a socket or screwdriver, remove this standoff to prevent it from pressing against the bottom of your new, longer SSD, which could cause physical damage. Once the space is clear, insert the new SSD at a 30-degree angle, press it down gently, and secure it with the mounting screw.

Inside the bottom panel, you will notice spongy, adhesive thermal material designed for heat absorption. While this material is sized for the smaller factory drive, it is generally unnecessary to add more for a larger SSD unless the machine is under extreme, constant stress like 24/7 video rendering. If you are concerned about thermal performance, use monitoring software to track temperatures during your typical tasks. For most users, standard desk ventilation is perfectly adequate.

Assemble Battery and Case

Once the new drive is secured, you can proceed with the final step of reconnecting the battery.

Reassembling the laptop is a straightforward process. Align the back panel with the edges of the chassis and press down gently to clip it back into place. Avoid using excessive force; much like a mechanic closing a car hood, you want to ensure no tools or loose screws were accidentally left inside that could cause internal damage. I recommend circling the edges several times to ensure every clip is fully seated.

Check BIOS First

Before replacing the ten screws, perform a quick functionality test. Flip the laptop over and power it on while repeatedly pressing the F2 key (or Function + F2) to enter the BIOS. Navigate to the storage section to verify that the motherboard recognizes your new drive. If the SSD does not appear, you may need to reseat it or check if the drive itself is defective.

Put Screws Back

Once the BIOS confirms the upgrade is successful, hold the power button to shut down the machine. Now you can finish by replacing the screws. A best practice is to use a star pattern—securing the four corners first before filling in the edges and the two center screws—to ensure even tension across the panel. With the hardware secured, your Lenovo Legion 5 is ready for use.
