This article explains how to block YouTube Shorts from appearing while using the Brave browser, applicable for both desktop and mobile versions.
Why Do This
The rationale for this process stems from a personal choice to maintain privacy, particularly for users of privacy-focused operating systems like Graphene OS, which operates without Google Play to prevent Google apps (like YouTube) from spying and collecting your data. Due to this reason, accessing YouTube through the browser is the best option, helping safeguard personal data from tracking.
The motivation for blocking YouTube Shorts arose from a recent announcement by the YouTube CEO regarding plans to allow creators to utilise AI likeness in their Shorts. I never liked YouTube Shorts, finding them intrusive and prefer that they should be a separate app rather than integrated into YouTube. This annoyance is compounded by the way Shorts dominate the homepage, often overshadowing other video content.
Desktop Browser
To block Shorts on the Brave browser for the desktop version:
-Open the Brave settings
-Use the search function in the top right and search for “content filter” within the shield section.
-The browser includes built-in functionalities to filter various types of content, and users can easily check the box for YouTube Shorts.
-After refreshing the YouTube page, Shorts will no longer appear in recommended content or search results.
Mobile Browser
For mobile users, the process is similar.
-Access Brave settings
-Select “Shields and Privacy”
-Navigate to “content filtering” allows users to disable Shorts just as they would on the desktop version.
In conclusion, this method provides an effective way to enhance the YouTube experience by eliminating Shorts.
