Hey everyone, we’re talking about the Uber One renewal scam and why they make it so hard to cancel. I’m going through this literally right now and I have the evidence (see the video above).
Our Uber History
My wife and I have used Uber’s food delivery almost exclusively for six years. During the pandemic, we had three kids aged two and under, so we ordered in a lot. When Uber One launched in Canada for about $108 a year, we signed up immediately to get the discounts. We’ve been very loyal customers, but it’s finally getting too expensive and we need to cut costs.
We also noticed something strange recently with the “taxes and other fees” on our receipts. For Uber One restaurants, those fees used to be around $4, but over the last year, they’ve jumped to $7 or $8. Even with the membership, it’s becoming a rip-off.
The Issue
So, we decided to cancel. My membership page says the renewal is April 11th. Today is April 10th—that’s the most important part. Even though renewal is tomorrow, I just got an email charging me $108 today. I found out they actually charge you 24 hours before the renewal date. I figured I’d just cancel and get a quick refund, which is common with many services.
But when I tried to cancel, I hit a wall. After selecting end membership and hitting continue, a prompt appeared: “You are within 48 hours of renewal date, and your next scheduled payment may be processed.” It tells me to contact support to cancel, but when I hit close, it just sends me back in a loop.
So here’s the thing: my renewal date is tomorrow, yet they’ve already charged my PayPal a day in advance. Now I can’t cancel because I’m within that 48-hour window, so the service forces me to contact support. They’ve made it as difficult as possible to cancel right at the finish line. Most people will just give up and let it renew because of laziness or convenience, and that’s exactly what they want.
To me, this is total BS. It’s an injustice and straight-up false advertising. They say it renews tomorrow, so why charge me today?
Uber is valued at $146 billion. How can a massive tech company researching self-driving cars fail to create a simple one-click cancel button? It’s intentional. If any Uber PR person tries to defend this, the only other explanation is that they have the dumbest executives and developers in the world. There’s no excuse for telling me I’ll renew tomorrow and then blocking my ability to cancel today.
I’m not alone in this, either. I found Reddit posts (see here, here, and here) from people on free trials and paid memberships facing the exact same loop. Uber’s own help documentation even contradicts what’s happening. It claims that if you cancel within 24 hours and get charged, you’ll be automatically refunded. But as I just showed in the above video, that process doesn’t even work because the app traps you in a support loop instead.
I am 100% done with Uber. We were going to test life without Uber One for a couple of months and maybe come back, but not anymore. I’m never taking their rides or using their delivery again. I’ll use Lyft, SkipTheDishes, or DoorDash. There are so many alternatives, and after this, I’m finished with them.
They’ve screwed over their customers with false advertising. This is a multi-billion dollar company, yet they’re operating in total scumbag territory. This isn’t just hearsay about Uber not paying drivers or being unethical—I’m showing you the evidence as I go through it in real-time (again, see the video above). I can’t lie about this; I’ve literally proven that their system is designed to cheat you.
The Solution
Consider this a forewarning. If you’re an Uber One customer looking to cancel, do it sooner rather than later, or you’re going to get screwed. Now I have to finish this recording just to go deal with the hassle of contacting support for something that should be my basic right to do with one click.
